Becoming a new parent is one of life’s major transition experiences. No matter how organised, enthusiastic and well-researched you are it is simply not possible to be fully prepared for becoming the primary support for a new little person that is completely dependent on you to both survive and thrive. And of course when you do become a new parent to a baby, you’ve just weathered the adventures of pregnancy and birth, which are profound experiences in and of themselves! So where is the guidebook for your newborn, your toddler, your young child, your teen and even your grown adult son or daughter?
As our children learn and grow, inevitably we need to adapt to their changing developmental needs and milestones all within an ever changing social and environmental landscape. This is an ongoing challenge as every child (just like every adult) develops in their own unique way. Without a doubt if we are dedicated ‘new parents’ on this journey, then the precious relationship with our children can teach us as much about unconditional love, ourselves, relationships, communication, values and boundaries as they learn along the way as well.
There is much research out there that confirms that the extreme period of adjustment that occurs when you become a new parent can be a huge minefield of stress, tension, confusion, exhaustion and anxiety. This is contradictory to the romantic ideal that having a baby is one of the most extraordinarily joyful and wonderful experiences of your life. Of course it can and should be that as well.
